In the 68th IPL match, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Chennai Super Kings by 27 runs and advanced to the IPL 2024 playoffs. In this match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore batted first and scored 218 runs. To make the playoffs, they needed to limit Chennai to 200 or fewer runs. Bangalore not only won by restricting Chennai to 191 runs in 20 overs, but also advanced to the last four thanks to outstanding bowling. With this, defending champion Chennai is eliminated from the tournament. Bangalore has advanced to the playoffs with six straight wins following six consecutive losses.

Dhoni hammered a 110-meter six off the first ball, using a stunning drive from fine leg. The squad needed 11 runs in five deliveries, but Swapnil Singh caught Dhoni on the next delivery. Shardul Thakur came to bat. There were no runs on the third ball. Now the side needed 11 runs off three balls. On the fourth ball, Shardul hit a shot to third base and stole a run. Chennai now needed ten runs in two balls to qualify. Jadeja appeared to the crease. Dayal delivered dot balls on the last two deliveries of the over, as Jadeja failed to score any runs. RCB won their sixth consecutive match of the season.

Chennai’s innings

The Chennai Super Kings faced a challenging start, with Maxwell removing captain RiturajGaikwad and YashDayal sending Daryl Mitchell to the pavilion. RachinRavindra and AjinkyaRahane took over, combining for a 66-run partnership. Lockie Ferguson dismissed Indian batsmen for 85 runs, while Ravindra scored his first half-century. Shivam Dubey scored seven runs, while Mitchell Santner left after three runs.

Chennai lost its sixth wicket, totaling 129 runs. Mahendra Singh Dhoni batted at position eight. Dhoni and Jadeja batted in the 16th over and scored 61 runs. Both just had to deal with 27 balls. However, YashDayal gave Chennai the most serious blow with the second ball of the 19th over. Swapnil Singh took Dhoni off guard. Against RCB, the former captain hit three fours and a six, totaling 25 runs off 13 balls. At the same time, Jadeja remained unbeaten with 42 runs, while Shardul Thakur had one. RCB’s YashDayal took two wickets, with Maxwell, Siraj, Ferguson, and Green each taking one.
